Kei Trucks: Japan's Mighty Mini Workhorses
Kei trucks (θ»½γγ©γγ―, kei torakku) are a category of small, lightweight commercial vehicles unique to Japan. Governed by Japan's kei car regulations, these trucks feature engines under 660cc displacement, measure no more than 3.4 meters long, and weigh under 350 kg unloaded. Despite their compact size, they are incredibly versatile and have become increasingly popular in the United States for farming, landscaping, hunting, and general utility work.
History & Regulations
The kei vehicle class was established in 1949 to provide affordable motorization for post-war Japan. Over the decades, regulations have evolved β engine displacement limits increased from 150cc to the current 660cc, and dimensions have grown slightly. Today, kei trucks represent one of Japan's most practical vehicle categories, with millions in service across the country.

Honda Acty
The Honda Acty is beloved for its mid-engine layout (similar to a sports car!) and legendary Honda reliability. First introduced in 1977, it became one of Japan's most trusted kei trucks. The unique mid-engine design provides better weight distribution than front-engine competitors, making it exceptionally stable when loaded.
Available Variants
Unique Features
- Mid-engine layout for excellent weight distribution
- Honda reliability and parts availability
- Real-Time 4WD system for on-demand traction
- Available with factory dump bed
- Crawler variant with rubber tracks for snow/mud
Reliability
Excellent. Honda engines are known for longevity. The E07A engine regularly exceeds 200,000 km with basic maintenance. Parts are widely available.
Import Considerations
1977β2001 models are 25-year rule eligible. Very popular import choice due to Honda brand recognition in the US. Strong aftermarket support.

Suzuki Carry
The Suzuki Carry is the world's best-selling kei truck and for good reason. In continuous production since 1961, the Carry has earned a reputation for being virtually indestructible. Its simple, front-engine design makes it easy to work on, and parts are the most affordable and available of any kei truck model.
Available Variants
Unique Features
- Best-selling kei truck worldwide β proven track record
- Simple, rugged design easy to repair anywhere
- Available 4WD with high/low transfer case
- Extremely affordable parts and maintenance
- Strong aftermarket and modification community
Reliability
Very good. The F6A and K6A engines are bulletproof workhorses. Simple mechanical design means fewer things to break. Some of the cheapest maintenance costs of any kei truck.
Import Considerations
1961β2001 models are 25-year rule eligible. The most commonly imported kei truck to the US. Huge community and parts network. Budget-friendly import option.

Daihatsu Hijet
The Daihatsu Hijet holds the distinction of being one of the oldest continuously produced kei trucks, with roots going back to 1960. Daihatsu (a Toyota subsidiary) is renowned for their small-engine expertise. The Hijet stands out with its incredible variety of factory configurations, from the extended-cab Jumbo to the off-road-ready Climber.
Available Variants
Unique Features
- Longest-running kei truck model line (since 1960)
- Jumbo variant offers extra cab space and legroom
- Factory Climber variant comes with lift kit and off-road tires
- Available with scissor-lift dump bed
- Wide variety of special-purpose factory configurations
Reliability
Very good. The EB and EF series engines are proven and durable. Daihatsu specializes in small engines and the quality shows. Some electrical quirks in older models.
Import Considerations
1960β2001 models are 25-year rule eligible. Very popular in agricultural communities. The Jumbo cab version is highly sought after for its extra interior space. Climber variants command premium prices.

Subaru Sambar
The Subaru Sambar is the enthusiast's kei truck. Its unique rear-engine, rear/all-wheel-drive layout mirrors that of a Porsche 911, earning it the affectionate nickname 'Farmer's Porsche.' It's the only kei truck ever made with a four-cylinder engine and available supercharger, making it the performance choice in the segment.
Available Variants
Unique Features
- Only kei truck with rear-engine layout β like a Porsche 911!
- Available supercharged EN07 engine for extra power
- Subaru Symmetrical AWD for superior traction
- Four independent suspension corners for best ride quality
- Earned nickname 'Farmer's Porsche' for its layout
Reliability
Good to excellent. The EN07 engine is a proven unit, though head gaskets should be monitored (common Subaru trait). Supercharged variants need more attention. The AWD system is extremely capable.
Import Considerations
1961β2001 models are 25-year rule eligible. The 'Porsche layout' makes it a collector favorite. Supercharged models are rare and command premium prices. Later TT/TV models are most desirable.

Mitsubishi Minicab
The Mitsubishi Minicab is the workhorse's workhorse. Backed by one of Japan's largest automotive manufacturers, the Minicab offers robust build quality and extensive parts availability. It made history as the first kei truck available in a fully electric version (MiEV), showcasing Mitsubishi's forward-thinking approach.
Available Variants
Unique Features
- Backed by Mitsubishi's extensive dealer network
- Available in electric version (MiEV) β first electric kei truck
- Super low gear range for extreme off-road capability
- 3-way dump bed available from factory
- Strong Mitsubishi 3G83 engine shared across multiple models
Reliability
Good. The 3G83 engine is a well-known, reliable unit. Build quality is solid. Parts availability is good through Mitsubishi's extensive network. Earlier carbureted models are simpler to maintain.
Import Considerations
1966β2001 models are 25-year rule eligible. The Minicab is a solid, no-nonsense choice. Less 'exotic' than the Sambar but very practical. Dump truck variants are popular for landscaping businesses.

Mazda Scrum
The Mazda Scrum is essentially a Suzuki Carry wearing a Mazda badge β and that's a great thing. As an OEM rebadge, it offers identical mechanical reliability to the best-selling Carry but often at a lower price point since it's less recognized by international buyers. Smart shoppers know the Scrum is a hidden gem.
Available Variants
Unique Features
- Mechanically identical to Suzuki Carry β same reliability
- Often available at lower prices than the Suzuki equivalent
- Mazda dealer service network support in Japan
- Some unique Mazda-specific trim levels and colors
- Great value proposition β Carry quality at a lower price
Reliability
Very good β identical to Suzuki Carry since it shares the same drivetrain. All Suzuki Carry parts are interchangeable. Same proven F6A/K6A engines.
Import Considerations
1989β2001 models are 25-year rule eligible. Because it's a rebadged Suzuki Carry, all Carry parts fit perfectly. Often overlooked, which means lower purchase prices at auction in Japan.

Nissan Clipper
The Nissan Clipper is Nissan's entry in the kei truck market through OEM partnerships β first with Mitsubishi and later with Suzuki. While newer models aren't yet eligible for US import, the Clipper represents the modern evolution of kei trucks with updated safety features and improved refinement.
Available Variants
Unique Features
- Nissan badge with Mitsubishi/Suzuki engineering underneath
- Access to Nissan's massive dealer network in Japan
- Later models based on current-gen Suzuki Carry
- Good availability of parts through multiple sources
- Often well-maintained due to Nissan service plans
Reliability
Good. Mechanical components are from either Mitsubishi or Suzuki, both proven platforms. Nissan dealer-maintained examples tend to have excellent service records.
Import Considerations
Only 2003+ models exist (too new for 25-year rule until ~2028). Earlier Nissan kei trucks were sold under different names. Most useful for future import planning.
